How to Add SPF and DKIM Records

How to Add SPF and DKIM Records

In this guide, we will lead you through incorporating SPF and DKIM records into your domain.

SPF (Sender Policy Framework) and DKIM (DomainKeys Identified Mail) records play a crucial role in an email marketing platform. They are essential to authenticate emails, prevent spoofing, enhance deliverability rates, and build trust with recipients by ensuring the emails are coming from legitimate sources.

Step 1: Log in to your Mailvio account.

Step 2: Click on the profile icon located in the top right corner of the Dashboard and select "Company Profile".

Step 3: Select the "My Domains" tab.

Step 4: Adding a domain

  • Click on the "Add & Verify a Domain" button and enter the email address associated with the domain you want to verify.
  • After adding the email address, the necessary authentication details will be sent to you via email.

Once the email is added, go to your domain host provider to add the necessary DNS entries, host, and values required for adding the SPF and DKIM records.

Step 5: Modify DNS Settings

  • Log in to your domain host provider's DNS manager or domain settings. E.g. GoDaddy, Namecheap, etc.
  • In this guide, we are using GoDaddy to host the domain. Click on the "Add New Record" button to add a DNS record.

Step 6: Create a CNAME Record for DKIM

  • Add a "CNAME" record and the provided values from the authentication process.

Step 7: Set Host and Value

  • The Host should be mp1._domainkey

  • The Value should be dkim.ourmailsender.com

  • Set TTL to the lowest value.

  • Save the record.

Step 8: Create a TXT Record for SPF

  • Add a "TXT" record.

  • The Host should be the symbol.

  • The Value should be
    v=spf1 include:spf_234mailvio.ourmailsender.com ~all

  • Set TTL to the lowest value.

  • Save the record.

Step 9: After adding all records, go back to your Mailvio account and verify the sending domain by clicking on the "Authenticate" button to initiate DNS propagation.

Managing Subdomains

SPF Record for Subdomains: Ensure each subdomain has its unique SPF record for email authentication.

DKIM Record for Subdomains: Establish separate DKIM records for each subdomain to maintain authenticity.

Avoid using multiple SPF records for a top-level domain to prevent delivery complications.
